Western China International Fair (WCIF) was founded in May 2000 for the implementation of China's Western China Development Strategy, choosing Chengdu City, Sichuan Province as its permanent site. Under the theme of “co-hosting, sharing and win-win”, the sponsors of WCIF include the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. The WCIF is supported by Boao Forum for Asia and organized by Sichuan Provincial People's Government, the member units include 16 ministries/commissions, 12 western provinces (autonomous regions and municipality) and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, WCIF is a state-level international exposition which has been successfully held for 15 sessions. With 15 years' development, WCIF has been an important window and optimal platform for investment promotion, trade cooperation and diplomatic service in western China, as well as collaboration between eastern and western China, and cooperation between China and other countries. In 2014, WCIF was classified by the Chinese Government as one of the nationally institutional large-scale international exhibitions (forums/ conventions). In March 2015, WCIF was included in One Belt One Road (OBOR) strategy of Chinese Government White Paper and became one of the ten major national exhibitions (conventions) for facilitating the construction of OBOR.
he WCIF facilitates investment promotion and is conducive to economic growth. The WCIF, founded based on the China Western Development strategy, consistently highlights features of western China and the region's achievements in internationalization, economy and trade, and suitability for investment. In the past WCIFs, over 10,000 investment and cooperation contracts worth over RMB 5.22 trillion were signed. In the last five WCIFs, the provinces (districts and cities) of western China signed 6,265 projects valued at over RMB 4.1 trillion.
The WCIF is committed to advancing trade cooperation and to realizing mutual benefit and a win-win situation. In the past WCIFs, foreign countries (regions) participated a total of 914 times, and there were 46,800 participating enterprises that covered an accumulated exhibition space of 1,604,000 O and generated a total turnover of RMB 1.25 trillion. The past fairs have been attended by 344,000 visitors, of whom 95,000 hailed from overseas. In the last five WCIFs, a total of more than 25,000 enterprises exhibited over an accumulated exhibition space of 960,000 O, and the provinces (districts and cities) of western China netted a total turnover of RMB 961.8 billion.
The WCIF has increased interaction between high-ranking officials and promoted international exchange. In the past fairs, attendees included a portfolio of top Chinese leaders like Li Keqiang, Wang Qishan, Wang Yang, Ma Kai, Wu Bangguo and Wen Jiabao, as well as more than thirty high-ranking foreign dignitaries such as President of Czech Republic Melos Zeman, President of Republic of Macedonia Gjorge Ivanov, Governor-General of Australia Dame Quentin Bryce, former Prime Minister of Mongolia Norovyn Altankhuyag, former Prime Minister of France Pierre Raffarin, UN Assistant Secretary-General Jan Mattsson, and former Director-General of the WTO Pascal Lamy, along with more than 500 ministers and major international organization leaders.
