Mianyang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone mainly develops the three leading industries of electronic information, automobiles, and new materials, and strives to promote the development of modern industries represented by high-tech industries and strategic emerging industries, as well as modern service industries represented by e-commerce and Internet. In 2019, it ranked 54th in the comprehensive ranking of national high-tech zones. China's western region includes 12 provinces, autonomous regions and municipality, namely, five in the southwest (Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Tibet), five in the northwest (Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Xinjiang, Ningxia), and Inner Mongolia and Guangxi. The total area of the western region is about 6.86 million square kilometers, accounting for about 72% of the total area of China. At the same time, the western region is bordered by 12 countries including Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam, with a borderline of more than 18,000 kilometers long, accounting for 91% of China's land borderline length; and the western region faces many countries in Southeast Asia across the sea, with a continental coastline of 1,595 kilometers, accounting for about 10% of China's coastline length. By the end of 2018, the western region has a land area of 6.781589 million square kilometers, accounting for 70.6% of China's total area; and has a population of 379.5587 million, accounting for 27.2% of China's total population. The western region has a vast territory, among which Chongqing is the only first-level administrative region with a per capita GDP that exceeds the national level, reaching RMB 75,828, ranking ninth among the provincial-level administrative regions in China. Moreover, with the exception of the Sichuan Basin and the Guanzhong Plain, most of the western regions are relatively backward economically and lack development. Chengdu and Chongqing in the Sichuan Basin rank among the top 10 cities in China, and Xi'an in the Guanzhong Plain ranks among the top 20.
